Resizing images is a pretty basic image editing function and yet it's not offered by any of the pre-installed apps on Windows. Not even Microsoft's Photos app offers to resize images. But would you mind if you could resize images with a right-click on Windows?

Usually, resizing an image on Windows involved quite a few steps. If you're a professional or even if you just edit a lot of photos you probably have Adobe Photoshop. It's a huge piece of software and loading it all up to simply resize an image is not an ideal solution. Even if you use another light-weight tool that allows image resizing, you will probably have to open the image using the said tool first. Then you can resize it as you want and then save it. With Image Resizer for Windows, you don't need to do any of that.

How to resize images on Windows

Simply right-click an image, select Resize pictures. If you want to batch resize multiple images, you can do that too. Select all the images and then right-click on any one of them.

Once you do, the Image Resizer window will open up. Here, you can use one of the pre-defined sizes – Small, Medium, Large, Phone – or use a custom size of your own. While you may prefer simply resizing the original image, Image Resizer does not do that. Not by default at least. It will resize the image but save the resized image as another copy instead of overwriting the original one. Considering how easy it makes resizing images, that's a good thing. You wouldn't want to resize an image into a smaller image accidentally. Resizing it back to the original size might result in pixelation. But if you would still like to change this default behavior, Image Resizer lets you do that as well. Simply tick the checkbox next to Resize the original pictures (don't create copies) in the Image Resizer window.

Click the Resize button when you're satisfied with the settings and your select image or images will be resized. Although you can batch-resize images, you can only resize all the images to the same size at once. It would've been nice to be able to resize some images to one size while another group of images to another size at once. But considering Image Resizer is completely free and it makes resizing images so easy, we can't really complain. If you do want to resize different groups of images into different sizes, you'd have to do it the old-fashioned way. That is select a group and resize it and then select the other group and resize it again.

The latest version of Image Resizer is v3.0 and it is compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 10. The developer Brice Lambson aims to add further advanced features to Image Resizer in upcoming updates. These features include but are not limited to the ability to edit default sizes, give custom filenames to resized images, and select JPEG picture quality level. Since I often write articles such as this, some probably more detailed that include many images too, resizing images is something I do a lot. Image Resizer does make life really easy for people like me.

For some reason, I couldn't get the app to install on the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17046. If you're running the stable build 1709 though you shouldn't have any problems.

Now I will fill this star with a color of my choice. For doing this, click on Fill drop-down menu and select Solid color from the list. For resizing this image, click on the Resize option located at the Image tab.

You can resize either by percentage or by pixels depending upon your needs. Resizing by pixels let you specify the different dimensions in detail. In this case, we will resize the image by percentage. For doing this, you just need to give a value for the horizontal dimension and paint will automatically adjust the vertical dimension for you in order to maintain the aspect ratio of the image. I have given the horizontal value of 50. It is shown in the following image:

After setting the dimensions, click OK. The size of your photo will be reduced by 50 percent as shown in the image below:

Now just press Ctrl+ S to save your newly edited and resized picture. Your picture will now look something like this:

You can add any of the available 2D or 3D shapes and stickers to your image. In this example, I will apply a sticker on my picture. It is shown in the image below:

For resizing the image, click on the Canvas tab.

Method # 3: Using Photos application to resize an image

In this method, we will tell you how you can resize and edit your images using Photos application in Windows 10. For doing this, you need to proceed as follows:

Right-click on the picture that you want to edit and resize. From the cascading menu, click on Open with and then click on Photos from the sub-cascading menu.

Your picture will now open up with Photos as shown in the image below:

For editing your image, click on Edit & Create and then click on Edit Bettertouchtool 3 346. from the drop-down list.

Now from the edit window, choose any filter of your choice. In this example, I have chosen the sunscreen.

For resizing your photo, click on Crop and rotate.

Now click on Aspect ratio and select any aspect ratio of your choice as shown in the image below:

I have selected the square aspect ratio in this case and have adjusted my picture in that square accordingly as shown in the following image:

Now click on Done.

After this, click on Save a copy to save your picture as a copy as shown in the following image:

Your newly edited and resized photo will now look something like this:

By following any of the three methods listed above, you can resize and edit your images very easily in Windows 10. These methods have eliminated the need for using paid third-party applications for photo editing. When you can make use of the built-in applications provided by Windows 10, then what is the need of buying expensive software for photo editing and resizing. You can get all this done by following just a few simple steps.
